OF GOOSEBERRIES & FRIENDS
On the way to my friend's room, I passed the kitchen and saw a bottle of athela amla aka Indian gooseberries in brine. It was a familiar sight; everyone I knew, including my home, would have bottled sunshine sitting on the kitchen countertop or windowsill as the colder season commenced. There was however one little difference - the bottle had a green chili in it as well. So I asked my friends mum why did she add the chili, it wasn't how my mom brined gooseberries? To which aunty said, 'for a nice kick!'. I chuckled and proceeded to my friend's room.
That sight and conversation stayed with me and this year as I brine the Gooseberries, I made sure to add a green chili, you know, for a nice kick!
Indian Gooseberries are loaded with vitamin C and E that increase immunity and fight off free radicals. Therefore, great to eat in fall/winter. By itself, Gooseberries have sharp and sour taste, so the best way to eat is by brining them.
You can make this delightful, immune boosting snack by following the recipe.
